Khalilur Rahman, the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, has been elected as the President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) with a decisive vote of 99 out of 190 member states. His opponent, Andreas Kakouris, the ambassador of Cyprus, received 91 votes. Rahman is set to take office in early September 2023, and he has pledged to honor the interests of all member nations during his tenure. He emphasized his commitment to neutrality, stating, 'I'll be the president of all member states' and vowing to engage with all nations while seeking common ground. Rahman also assured that his personal views would not interfere with his responsibilities as President. Kirill Logvinov, director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Department of International Organizations, expressed optimism regarding Rahman's election, indicating that Moscow looks forward to constructive cooperation with him. This election signals a strong mandate for Rahman to lead the UNGA in addressing global issues collaboratively.
