A violent confrontation occurred on Tuesday in Kunnam, near Perambalur district, between supporters of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). The clash was triggered by a controversial remark made by DMK Deputy General Secretary A. Raja on social media, which incited anger among VCK members. Both parties sought police permission to protest, but Kunnam police denied the requests due to concerns over potential violence. Despite police presence, tensions escalated as supporters gathered near the Kunnam bus stand, leading to a physical altercation involving sticks and stones. The police intervened but struggled to control the situation initially. Eventually, they managed to disperse the crowd using batons. Several individuals from both sides were injured and treated at Kunnam government hospital. Following the incident, additional police forces were deployed to maintain order in the area, as local traders temporarily closed their shops due to the unrest. VCK officials have called for action against those responsible for the violence.
