Nine years have passed since the proposal to create an Ombudsman for students attending self-financing institutions in Kerala was first introduced, yet successive governments have failed to act on it. This negligence has left numerous students exposed to harassment and exploitation. The recent tragic death of R.L. Nithin Raj, a student from Kannur Dental College in Anjarakandy, following reported harassment by faculty members, has reignited discussions around the urgent need for such oversight. Advocates argue that without an Ombudsman, students lack a formal mechanism to address grievances, raising serious concerns about their safety and well-being in these institutions. The government’s inaction has prompted renewed calls from various stakeholders to prioritize the establishment of an Ombudsman to protect students' rights and ensure accountability within the education system.
