In Mumbai, auto-rickshaw and taxi unions have launched a mass signature campaign opposing a directive from the state government that requires all licensed drivers to read, write, and speak Marathi by May 1. This policy is expected to significantly affect the livelihoods of many drivers, particularly those from northern India, who make up 75-80% of the 2.80 lakh registered auto-rickshaws and taxis in the city. Union leader Shashank Sharad Rao of the Autorickshaw Chalak Malak Sanghatana Sanyukt Kruti Samiti Maharashtra (ACMSSKSM) stated that they aim to collect over 100,000 signatures to present to Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik by April 28. The unions argue that the language requirement poses an unnecessary barrier to earning a livelihood, as they believe that basic communication is sufficient for transporting passengers safely. If the government proceeds with the directive, the unions plan to hold protests at key locations around the city starting May 4, drawing attention to the issue and seeking support from commuters.
