Uttar Pradesh has made significant strides in its power sector, achieving the status of the number one state in India for peak power demand supply, as stated by Energy Minister AK Sharma. The state's thermal power generation capacity has nearly doubled from 5,160 MW in 2017 to 9,120 MW, and overall power availability has surged from 11,803 MW to 22,000 MW. The peak power demand, which averaged around 13,000 MW previously, reached 31,468 MW last year, with a supply of 29,475 MW recorded on April 28, 2023, despite adverse weather conditions. Additionally, the number of electricity consumers has grown significantly, with 3.7 crore new connections added since 2017. Sharma highlighted the state's advancements in renewable energy, noting that Uttar Pradesh ranked first in daily installations under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana in April 2026 and has become a leader in the bio-energy sector with 25 compressed biogas plants producing 240 tonnes daily. Notably, electricity tariffs have not increased in the past six years, and farmers continue to receive free electricity.
