The Bihar government has taken a significant step in enhancing its aviation infrastructure by approving the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) for two new greenfield airports in Sonepur, Saran district and Ajgaibinath Dham, Bhagalpur. The state cabinet allocated ₹5.06 crore (approximately $610,000 USD) as a consultancy fee to RITES Ltd, a government-owned engineering consultancy firm, to assist in the planning and implementation of these projects. According to Nilesh Ramchandra Deore, the special secretary of the civil aviation department, this initiative is a crucial milestone for improving regional connectivity, promoting tourism, and driving economic growth in Bihar.

These new airports will complement existing facilities in Patna, Gaya, Darbhanga, and Purnia, forming part of a broader strategy to enhance air connectivity across the state. The projects align with the Indian government's UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, aimed at making air travel accessible in smaller towns. Additionally, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been actively upgrading smaller airports, with recent tenders issued for infrastructure improvements at Saharsa, Birpur, Valmikinagar, and Muzaffarpur airports. These upgrades will enhance last-mile connectivity and support tourism and disaster management capabilities in flood-prone areas, signaling a comprehensive approach to aviation development in Bihar.
