The Karnataka government is considering the Karnataka Heatwave Resilience & Integrated Heat Action Management Framework – 2026 to enhance the state's preparedness for extreme heat events. This proposed framework aims to establish a coordinated approach to manage heatwaves, addressing public health and infrastructure challenges posed by rising temperatures. It includes the appointment of a State Chief Heat Officer and District Nodal Heat Officers to oversee local implementation. Each district will be required to develop a Heat Action Plan supported by early warning systems linked to meteorological data. Emergency measures outlined in the plan include creating hydration points, shaded shelters, and 'Cool Rooms' in government hospitals to treat heatstroke cases. The framework also focuses on worker safety, recommending mandatory rest periods for outdoor workers during peak heat hours and public awareness campaigns on hydration. Urban initiatives will target cities like Bengaluru, promoting tree cover and reflective materials in construction to mitigate heat buildup. The proposal aims to position Karnataka as a national leader in heatwave resilience through scientific planning and coordinated governance.
