Maj.-Gen. Yoram Halevi, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), has formally requested that the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) cease all support for the Turkish organization İHH, which Israel has classified as a terrorist organization since 2008. This demand was made following reports that WFP had transferred fuel to İHH within the Gaza Strip. In a letter addressed to WFP head Shaun Hughes, Halevi warned that supporting İHH's activities is illegal and could lead to severe consequences.
The İHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation is described as a Government-organized non-governmental organization (GONGO), closely associated with Turkey's ruling party led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. According to Israel's Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, İHH operates with 'two hats': one as a humanitarian organization engaged in legitimate activities globally, and the other as a radical organization involved in terrorism and pro-Hamas activities. Beyond its humanitarian efforts in Gaza, İHH has also been involved in organizing flotillas to the region, including a recent one that was intercepted by the Israeli Navy.
