Deezer, a prominent music streaming platform, announced that 44% of its daily uploads, approximately 75,000 songs, are generated by artificial intelligence (AI). This surge highlights the growing prevalence of AI in music creation, although consumption remains low, accounting for only 1-3% of total streams. A significant portion, 85%, of these streams is flagged as fraudulent and subsequently demonetized. Deezer's CEO, Alexis Lanternier, emphasized the need for the music ecosystem to address artist rights and transparency as AI-generated music becomes more mainstream. Additionally, a recent survey revealed that 97% of respondents could not differentiate between AI-generated and human-made music. The issue of AI in music has been underscored by a recent case where a US man, Michael Smith, was convicted for using AI to create fake songs and stream them billions of times, resulting in over $8 million in fraudulent royalties. Smith faces up to five years in prison and must forfeit the money he earned from his scheme.
