Calcutta University (CU) is preparing to introduce a four-year undergraduate honours with research programme, which will allow students to either graduate after three years or continue for an honours degree in their fourth year. To ensure that affiliated colleges can support this new initiative, CU is conducting a review of infrastructure across its 146 affiliated colleges. Meetings are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, focusing on the colleges' readiness to facilitate the final two semesters, which require robust research capabilities. Each college must demonstrate that it has at least two permanent PhD-qualified faculty members and adequate laboratory and library facilities, as per University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines. If a college lacks the necessary infrastructure, students may be relocated to nearby institutions that can accommodate their research projects. Additionally, CU is considering a cluster college model to enhance student access to quality facilities. This initiative marks a significant step in enhancing undergraduate education in Kolkata.
