On April 27, 2023, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) approved two significant amnesty schemes aimed at alleviating the financial burden on residents by offering up to 90% waivers on penalties for overdue property tax and water dues. The proposals, introduced by House leader Sagar Naik, received unanimous backing from all parties. Under the property tax amnesty, eligible property holders can benefit from a 90% concession on penal interest and delay charges, along with a 50% reduction in levy charges. This initiative is expected to assist between 40,000 to 70,000 property holders, providing relief estimated between ₹250 crore and ₹400 crore. The schemes will be available for 60 days, with a potential one-month extension. The NMMC's data indicates that out of approximately 3.58 lakh registered properties, nearly 1.72 lakh are defaulters, with principal dues totaling about ₹1,197 crore. Naik emphasized the importance of this initiative for financially stressed residents, particularly those in gaothan villages and low-income groups. However, some corporators raised concerns regarding the fairness of the amnesty to compliant taxpayers, highlighting that around 19,000 property holders had already settled their dues. An amendment was also passed to exclude CIDCO from the scheme due to outstanding dues of ₹19 crore.
