With the reopening of schools in Pune scheduled for early June, parents may face a 15% increase in school transport fees as the Pune Bus and Car Owners Association considers raising charges. This potential hike is driven by a sharp rise in fuel prices, including petrol, diesel, and CNG, along with escalating operational costs. Maintenance costs alone have surged by 25% to 30% over the past year, compounded by new safety regulations for school buses that require additional investments in equipment and training. Rajan Junavane, president of the association, emphasized that while safety is paramount, the financial burden on parents is significant. To alleviate costs, he proposed a return to a hybrid learning model, which would reduce the number of buses on the road. Parents have expressed their concerns about the cumulative effect of rising school-related expenses, with many feeling the pressure of increased costs.
