In anticipation of America's 250th anniversary, students in Garden City, New York, collaborated on a districtwide STEAM project to create 'American 250 Automatons.' This initiative involved students from various grade levels who designed moving mechanical figures that celebrate pivotal moments and influential figures in U.S. history. The project commenced at Garden City High School, where students in Mr. Mike Zagari's class created digital presentations on significant historical events such as the American Revolution and the moon landing. Middle school STEAM students, guided by Dr. Tia Albig and Ms. Lori Biondi, drew inspiration from these presentations to conceptualize their automaton designs. Elementary students then transformed these concepts into functioning automatons using cardboard, engaging in hands-on engineering and problem-solving. The finished automatons were displayed at an art exhibit on May 19 at Garden City High School, where community members could interact with the exhibits. Students expressed their enjoyment and the educational value of the project, highlighting the importance of American history and engineering skills.
