The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted the inaugural flight trial of TARA, the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation weapon system, off the coast of Odisha. TARA is notable as India's first indigenous glide weapon system, designed to convert unguided warheads into precision-guided munitions. Developed in collaboration with the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in Hyderabad and other DRDO laboratories, TARA aims to enhance the lethality and accuracy of low-cost weapons targeting ground-based threats. The Defence Ministry has highlighted that the kit's development involved partnerships with Development cum Production Partners (DcPP) and various Indian industries, which have already started production activities. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his congratulations to the teams involved, emphasizing the trial's significance in bolstering India's indigenous defense capabilities. Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat also acknowledged the successful trial.
