The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has decided to revive its long-stalled plan to decentralize the Wazirabad water treatment plant, which currently has a capacity of 120 million gallons per day (mgd). The new plan involves splitting the facility into two plants with capacities of 80mgd and 40mgd, and includes significant upgrades and maintenance work. This comes after a report from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) highlighted the lack of progress on the project, which was initially approved in March 2014 with a budget of ₹2,243 crore (approximately $286 million). The Asian Development Bank (ADB) had withdrawn its funding in 2019 due to irregularities, but recent discussions have led to a renewed agreement to provide financial support. The revised project cost is now estimated at ₹2,574 crore, with the Delhi government hoping to secure around $200 million from ADB to finance the initiative. This upgrade is expected to significantly enhance water supply for residents across several localities in Delhi.
