Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is in a precarious position as he attempts to form Tamil Nadu's first coalition government. Despite emerging as the largest single party with 108 seats in the recent elections, he currently has the backing of only 116 MLAs, falling short of the 118 needed for a majority in the 234-seat assembly. The situation is complicated by the refusal of smaller parties, including TTV Dhinakaran's AMMK and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), to support him. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which holds two MLAs, is pivotal to Vijay's success, and its leader, Thol Thirumavalavan, is still in talks with the DMK leadership. Vijay has met with Governor RV Arlekar several times to assert his claim to form a government, but the governor has yet to grant him the authority to take the oath, citing the need for proof of majority support. The coalition's dynamics are further complicated by varying conditions from Congress and the unconditional backing from left parties CPI and CPM. Until Vijay can secure the necessary MLA support, his oath-taking remains uncertain.
