In response to the onset of the monsoon season, the Kodagu district administration in Karnataka has enforced a ban on heavy vehicles from June 10 to July 9, 2023. This precautionary measure aims to protect public safety and reduce disruptions caused by heavy rainfall, which can lead to landslides and road accidents. The ban specifically targets trucks transporting timber and sand, as well as goods vehicles exceeding a gross weight of 18,500 kg. Essential service vehicles, such as those supplying cooking gas and milk, are exempt from this restriction. District Magistrate SJ Somashekhar has authorized the installation of signboards and the establishment of checkposts at key entry points on National Highway 275 to monitor compliance. Mobile patrol teams will also conduct inspections throughout the ban period. Authorities have warned that strict legal action will be taken against violators to ensure adherence to the order, emphasizing the importance of traffic management during the rainy season.
