DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, is set to potentially achieve a valuation of up to $50 billion during its inaugural fundraising drive. This strategic shift comes after years of rejecting external funding, as the company aims to raise between $3 billion and $4 billion to enhance its computing capabilities and improve employee benefits. The 60-billion-yuan (approximately $8.8 billion) national artificial intelligence fund, established in January 2022, is reportedly in talks to lead the investment round. Additionally, Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings is also exploring opportunities to invest in DeepSeek. The fundraising initiative is crucial for DeepSeek, as it seeks to regain its competitive edge against domestic rivals, including well-capitalized companies such as ByteDance and Alibaba, as well as emerging players like MiniMax and Moonshot AI, who have successfully secured substantial funding from various markets.
