West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee (leader of the Trinamool Congress party) has firmly rejected calls to resign after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a decisive victory in the recent assembly elections, winning 207 seats out of 294. Banerjee characterized the election outcome as a conspiracy rather than a legitimate mandate from the people, claiming that her party only secured 80 seats and alleging that nearly 100 seats were 'looted' due to irregularities in the counting process. To address the situation, she announced the formation of a 10-member fact-finding committee to investigate post-poll violence, while simultaneously dismissing accusations regarding violence during the 2021 elections as unfounded. The BJP, on the other hand, has rejected Banerjee's claims and accused her of undermining democratic processes. Legal experts indicate that Banerjee may need to resign once the new government establishes a majority in the assembly, intensifying the political confrontation in West Bengal.
