In a significant move, Microsoft is set to implement its first-ever voluntary retirement buyout program for eligible employees in the United States. This initiative comes as the tech giant navigates the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) and follows a series of layoffs that began in early 2023. Approximately 7% of its US workforce, or about 8,750 employees, may qualify for this program, which targets workers at the senior director level and below who have a combined age and years of service totaling 70 or more. Amy Coleman, Microsoft's executive vice president and chief people officer, expressed that the program aims to offer eligible employees the opportunity to retire on their own terms with substantial company support. However, it excludes certain senior roles and those on sales incentive plans. Despite these changes, Microsoft is making significant investments in AI, recently announcing an $18 billion commitment to AI cloud and infrastructure in Australia, which marks its largest investment in the region. This follows a previous commitment of $10 billion over four years for AI initiatives in Japan.
