Pravesh Wahi, a councillor from Rohini East, has been elected as the Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), securing 156 votes against Congress candidate Hazi Zaraf, who received only 9 votes. Wahi's election follows the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) decision not to nominate candidates for the mayoral polls. Previously, Wahi served as the Leader of the House and has held key positions in the North Delhi Municipal Corporation. He emphasized his commitment to improving sanitation in the city, announcing plans to procure new advanced machines at a cost of ₹50 crore (approximately $6 million USD) and to take strict action against those failing to maintain cleanliness. Wahi also outlined a timeline for reclaiming landfill sites, aiming to clear the Bhaslwa and Okhla sites by December 2023 and the Ghazipur site by 2027. His election has garnered support from Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who highlighted the importance of continuity in development. However, AAP's Saurabh Bharadwaj criticized the BJP's governance record, stating that the party has failed to bring about significant changes in Delhi.
