The district administration of Karnal, Haryana, has launched an investigation into a suspected influx of wheat from Uttar Pradesh, despite an active ban on such arrivals. The probe, led by Deputy Commissioner Anand Kumar Sharma and Additional Deputy Commissioner Rahul Raiya, has revealed that several commission agents allegedly facilitated the illegal inflow of wheat at three purchase centres. Consequently, the licenses of 13 commission agents have been temporarily suspended. This investigation comes in light of the state government's stringent regulations for the 2026-27 rabi marketing season, aimed at preventing scams similar to those during the previous kharif season. Farmers must now register on the Meri Fasal, Mera Byora (MFMB) portal to obtain gate passes for selling their produce, with biometric verification in place. However, it was discovered that some agents colluded with farmers from Uttar Pradesh, allowing them to register more land than they actually farmed. As a result, the arrival of wheat at certain mandis has increased, prompting the administration to set up two permanent checkpoints along the Haryana-UP border to curb illegal trade. So far, Karnal has recorded an arrival of 7.85 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat, which is lower than the 8.13 LMT recorded last season.
