The explosion occurred around 10:59 am local time while workers were engaged in cleaning operations involving explosives. Local media reported that one survivor suffered severe burns while the other had minor injuries. In response to the incident, President Lee Jae Myung has instructed a full investigation and mobilization of resources for rescue efforts. The Hanwha Group and its defense subsidiary, Hanwha Aerospace, have issued an apology and pledged to fully cooperate with the investigation. Prime Minister Kim Min-seok has also directed various government agencies to ensure effective rescue operations and prevent further casualties. The Daejeon facility is crucial for Hanwha Aerospace, specializing in the development of large propulsion engines and tactical weapon systems, and has a history of safety incidents, including fatal explosions in 2018 and 2019.
