The summer travel plans of many Indians are being severely impacted by the ongoing conflict in West Asia and the depreciation of the Indian rupee. Tour packages for international destinations have risen in cost by 20%, negating the benefits of a recent reduction in the Tax Collected at Source (TCS) on overseas packages. Rajiv Mehra, general secretary of the Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism & Hospitality (FAITH), noted a 15% to 20% decline in outbound travel demand compared to last year. Notably, travel to the UAE, which previously accounted for 35% of Indian outbound tourism, has dropped significantly. The strengthening US dollar, which has risen from ₹84 to ₹94 against the rupee in the past year, has further exacerbated the situation, making international travel less affordable. Travel fintech SanKash reported that overseas package costs have surged by 20% to 25% year-on-year, particularly after the escalation of the West Asia conflict. Despite these challenges, destinations in East Asia, such as Japan and South Korea, remain popular choices, along with domestic travel to places like Kashmir and Kerala.
