Three Indian operators, including the Adani Group, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), and Mumbai Port Authority (MPA), are in talks to develop Klaipeda Port in Lithuania, which serves as a strategic gateway to Central Europe and the Nordic nations. The Lithuanian State Seaport Authority is set to announce an international tender for the port's Southport expansion, which requires an investment of €1.4 billion. Klaipeda, the largest Baltic port, processed almost 40 million metric tons of cargo last year. Algis Latakas, Director General of Klaipeda Port, highlighted the benefits for Indian businesses in accessing Baltic and Northern European markets. Additionally, discussions will resume in October 2025 when a Klaipeda delegation visits New Delhi. This initiative aligns with the recently concluded India-EU Free Trade Agreement, which aims to eliminate tariffs on 90% of traded goods, facilitating Indian access to over 2 million consumers in the Baltic region. The port is also crucial for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), enhancing trade routes between India and the EU.
