The National Medical Commission (NMC) has proposed a significant amendment to the Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023, suggesting an extension of the maximum duration for medical students to complete their MBBS course from nine years to ten years. This proposal aims to assist students who encounter delays due to academic challenges, health issues, or personal circumstances. Under the draft amendment, students will not be permitted to continue their undergraduate medical education beyond ten years from their admission date, including the compulsory rotatory medical internship. Importantly, the proposal maintains the existing limit of four attempts to pass the First Professional MBBS examination, ensuring that academic standards are upheld. The draft notification has been published in the Gazette of India and is open for comments from medical colleges, students, and other stakeholders for a period of 30 days. Experts in medical education view this amendment as a positive step, acknowledging the need for flexibility in training without compromising the integrity of the examination process.
