The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Kerala around June 4. This prediction comes as conditions are deemed favorable for the monsoon to advance into various regions, including parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep Islands, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and areas of the Bay of Bengal. The official onset date for the monsoon over Kerala is June 1, which marks its arrival on the Indian mainland. This year, the progress of the monsoon is being closely monitored due to forecasts of below-normal rainfall at 90% of the Long Period Average (LPA) and concerns regarding the El Nino weather pattern, which can lead to weaker rainfall. Given that India receives a significant portion of its annual rainfall during the four-month monsoon season, the rains are critical for agriculture, particularly for the sowing of kharif crops such as paddy, pulses, and oilseeds. The performance of the monsoon is expected to significantly impact food production and inflation in the country.
