Gibriil Bakal, a 31-year-old man from Edmonton, has been apprehended in Turkey in connection with a first-degree murder charge related to the shooting death of Jama Roble in Ottawa. The arrest occurred after Bakal's fingerprints were checked at the Turkish border and matched an Interpol red notice issued for his capture. Roble, aged 33, was shot on Champagne Avenue South near Little Italy on January 29, 2024, and later died from his injuries in a hospital. Following Bakal's arrest, Turkish authorities promptly notified the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), leading to his extradition back to Canada. Bakal made his first court appearance in Ottawa shortly after his return.
