Mohammad Asim Bashir, 31, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to aiding Jihad al-Shamie in a reconnaissance mission for a potential terrorist attack on the UK Defence Academy. Bashir drove al-Shamie on a ten-hour round trip from Manchester to the Academy on August 14, 2022, despite being uninsured, where they spent 13 minutes in the vicinity. Al-Shamie later carried out a deadly attack on the Heaton Park synagogue in October 2022, resulting in the death of Melvin Cravitz and the shooter being killed by police. Prosecutors revealed that Bashir held extreme Islamic views and attempted to radicalize al-Shamie, with evidence of their discussions about traveling to Syria for jihad. Bashir was arrested upon returning to the UK from Pakistan on November 27, 2022, after the attack. He is also facing charges related to disseminating terrorist propaganda.
