Five experienced Italian divers tragically drowned in an underwater cave in the Maldives last Thursday, potentially due to a wrong turn that led them to a dead-end chamber. According to Laura Marroni, CEO of DAN Europe, the entrance to the corridor was obscured by a sandbank, complicating their escape. Once in the third chamber, which had no exit, the divers panicked as their oxygen supply dwindled. They were using standard 12-liter oxygen cylinders, which are not suitable for depths exceeding 100 feet, leaving them with only about 10 minutes of air. This situation likely caused them to breathe rapidly, further depleting their oxygen. The elite Finnish divers involved in the recovery operation found technical equipment, including GoPro cameras, which may provide insights into the incident. The investigation is ongoing to determine why the experienced divers undertook such a deep dive without appropriate equipment. Among the victims were Giorgia Sommacal, 20, and her mother, Monica Montefalcone, 51, highlighting the personal tragedy behind this incident.
