In a significant move to enhance emergency response, the Bengaluru police have launched an AI-powered multilingual upgrade to their Namma 112 helpline. This system is designed to address the city's linguistic diversity by enabling communication in over 10 languages, including major Indian languages like Malayalam, Marathi, and Gujarati, as well as foreign languages such as French and Arabic. The initiative, part of the Multilingual Voice AI for Nationwide Key Interventions (VANKI) program, aims to ensure that language barriers do not hinder timely assistance during emergencies. With around 200 personnel staffing the control room, the system processes between 9,000 and 10,000 calls daily, of which approximately 2,000 are actionable. The AI component identifies the caller's language and interacts to gather essential information, while a human operator oversees the conversation to ensure accuracy. Home Minister G Parameshwara emphasized the importance of this upgrade, noting its potential to assist non-local individuals seeking help in a cosmopolitan city like Bengaluru. The police force anticipates that this pioneering initiative will inspire similar efforts across India.
