The Vande Bharat Express train service between Jammu and Srinagar will be inaugurated by Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw on April 30, 2024, with public services commencing on May 2, 2024. This new 20-coach train aims to significantly reduce travel time between the twin capitals of Jammu and Kashmir while enhancing tourism and providing reliable transport. Previously, the route was served by an eight-coach train, limiting passenger capacity. The 267-kilometer journey will be operational six days a week, excluding Tuesdays. The project is part of a larger ₹43,780 crore initiative that began in the late 1990s, aimed at improving rail connectivity in the region. The Vande Bharat Express features modern amenities, including the 'Kavach' safety system and GPS-based information systems, promising a world-class travel experience. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the importance of this service for boosting the local economy and tourism sector. Following the flag-off, Vaishnaw will visit notable engineering structures on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, including the Anji and Chenab Bridges.
