Suvendu Adhikari is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, marking a significant moment as he becomes the first Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state. His political journey began in 1995 with the Congress party, and he later became a prominent figure in the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) under Mamata Banerjee. Adhikari gained statewide recognition during the 2007 Nandigram land acquisition protests, which were pivotal in weakening the Left Front's influence in rural areas. After a fallout with Banerjee, he joined the BJP in December 2020, enhancing the party's presence in West Bengal. His victory in the high-profile Nandigram constituency during the 2021 Assembly elections against Banerjee solidified his position within the BJP. Following the BJP's historic success in the 2026 Assembly elections, he is now the leading candidate for the Chief Minister's post, as the BJP legislature party prepares to elect its leader.
