The Telangana government has decided to implement a 50% salary reduction for all ministers to help mobilize finances for clearing dues owed to retired government employees. This decision comes in response to significant pending liabilities, estimated at ₹14,200 crore (approximately $1.7 billion USD), which include ₹6,200 crore for serving employees and ₹8,000 crore for retirees. During a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, state information minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy announced that all public representatives would also forego half of their salaries if necessary. To expedite the resolution of these dues, a resource mobilisation sub-committee will be established to engage with employee unions and pensioners' groups, with a target set to clear the dues within 100 days. Additionally, the cabinet expressed concerns over the financial hardships faced by pensioners due to delays in disbursing retirement benefits.
The cabinet also discussed the need for a swift investigation into alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project, initiated during the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi government. They plan to write to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to expedite this inquiry. Furthermore, the cabinet approved the redevelopment of the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium under a Public-Private Partnership model, which aims to enhance sports facilities and support athlete training.
