With global crude oil prices surpassing $100 per barrel, the Indian government is encouraging households and industries to transition from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to alternative energy sources like electric cookstoves and piped natural gas (PNG). Sujata Sharma, joint secretary in the petroleum ministry, highlighted the need to ease pressure on domestic fuel supplies and reduce import dependence amid the West Asia crisis. The government has assured that adequate supplies of LPG and liquefied natural gas (LNG) have been secured from a diversified base of 40 countries. Despite recent tensions affecting oil prices, including a 7% surge following the breakdown of US-Iran peace talks, India expects unimpeded navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The shift to electric options is projected to increase power demand, potentially reaching 271GW this summer, up from 242GW last fiscal year. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) indicated that the adoption of electric cooktops could add between 13-27GW to peak demand. Additionally, the government is committed to increasing the use of biofuels, with flex fuel engines capable of utilizing higher ethanol blends being developed for future use.
