Scientists have unveiled VitalID, a novel authentication technology that leverages the unique vibrations produced by breathing and heartbeats within the skull to log users into apps and websites. This innovative approach, developed through collaboration among researchers from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Temple University, and Texas A&M University, aims to replace traditional password and biometric methods, which often pose security risks. Introduced at the 2025 ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security, VitalID is primarily designed for extended reality (XR) environments, which include virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality technologies. The system relies on motion sensors already present in many modern XR headsets, requiring only software to function. In tests involving 52 participants over 10 months, VitalID demonstrated a user identification accuracy of over 95% and successfully rejected unauthorized users more than 98% of the time.
