In a troubling development for potato farmers in Uttar Pradesh, India, many are resorting to destroying their crops rather than face financial losses from harvesting. Farmers like Amarjeet from Nadsaa village have calculated that the costs of digging, bagging, and transporting potatoes exceed market prices, which currently hover around ₹350-400 per quintal for new potatoes and less than ₹100 per sack for old stock. The crisis is largely attributed to a series of bumper harvests that have flooded the market, combined with a lack of seasonal demand that typically spikes around Diwali. For instance, Ajay Mishra, a farmer with 500 sacks of Chipsona potatoes in cold storage, noted that cultivation costs range from ₹10,000-11,000 per bigha, while current returns are only about ₹7,000. Additionally, soaring cold storage costs, exacerbated by global supply chain issues, have made it unfeasible for many farmers to retrieve their crops. With no buyers in sight, some farmers are diverting unsold stock to cattle feed or dumping it illegally to avoid disposal fees. The local administration has issued notices to cold storage owners due to complaints about rotting potatoes but has yet to announce any relief measures.
