In light of the ongoing crisis in West Asia affecting fertilizer supply, the Bihar government has directed all district magistrates (DMs) to conduct physical verification of fertilizer stocks across the state. This initiative aims to prevent smuggling and hoarding, ensuring that the supply remains stable for the upcoming crop seasons. Agriculture director Saurav Suman Yadav emphasized the need for verification to assess stock levels and to identify any illicit activities such as black-marketing. Districts experiencing a significant rise in fertilizer consumption have been specifically instructed to verify the legitimacy of this usage. Additionally, areas bordering other states, where fertilizer smuggling is prevalent, have been put under strict surveillance, with the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) tasked to monitor illegal trade. Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan has communicated with state agriculture ministers regarding the availability of urea and Diammonium Phosphate (DAP), offering necessary support. As of April 1, Bihar reported a stock of 2.77 lakh metric tonnes of urea, 1.46 lakh metric tonnes of DAP, and 2.11 lakh metric tonnes of NPK, indicating sufficient supplies for the anticipated needs of wheat and maize crops in the upcoming season.
