The historic Kapoor Haveli in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, partially collapsed following heavy rains and a strong earthquake on Friday night. This century-old structure, which was declared a national heritage site by the Pakistani government in 2016, suffered significant structural damage as continuous rains weakened its integrity, and tremors exacerbated the situation. Shakeel Waheedullah, secretary of the heritage council for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, reported that a section of the wall caved in, raising alarms about the safety of the remaining structure. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries. Waheedullah urged for immediate action from the archaeology department and provincial government to restore and preserve the haveli, warning that neglect could lead to irreversible damage to the region's cultural heritage. The haveli, located in the historic Qissa Khwani bazaar, is significant as it was built by Dewan Basheswarnath Kapoor between 1918 and 1922 and served as the childhood home of Raj Kapoor and his siblings. Although it has been abandoned since the Partition in 1947, its architectural beauty remains evident, highlighting the need for urgent conservation efforts.
