India's reliance on domestic coal and rapid growth in renewable energy is expected to insulate the country from global power tariff spikes, even as fuel prices surge due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. This strategic energy mix positions India favorably compared to other nations facing significant cost increases.
- 01India's domestic coal supply and renewable energy growth provide insulation from global power tariff shocks.
- 02Coal contributes 55% to India's energy mix, with domestic production meeting over 80% of demand.
- 03Renewable energy's share in electricity generation increased from 14.2% in 2016 to 20.2% in 2025.
- 04India's average cost of power generation is projected to increase by only $0.1 per Megawatt Hour (MWh).
- 05Global renewable capacity continues to grow, with 692 GW added in 2025, making renewables cheaper than fossil fuels.

India's energy landscape is uniquely positioned to mitigate the impacts of rising global power tariffs, primarily due to its heavy reliance on domestic coal and a significant increase in renewable energy capacity. The ongoing conflict in West Asia has led to a surge in global fuel prices, with Asian spot LNG prices rising by 94% and coal prices increasing by 30% since late February 2026. However, India is expected to see only a minimal increase of $0.1 per Megawatt Hour (MWh) in its average cost of power generation, contrasting sharply with countries like Italy and Japan, where costs may escalate by $4.3 per MWh. This resilience is attributed to India's substantial domestic coal supply, which accounts for 55% of its energy mix and fuels over 74% of its total power generation. Furthermore, India's renewable energy capacity has grown significantly, with solar power capacity increasing more than 40-fold from 3 GW in 2014 to over 150 GW currently. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has emphasized the importance of renewables in enhancing energy security, noting that more than 85% of new renewable projects are now cheaper than fossil fuel alternatives. As the global energy landscape continues to evolve, India's strategic energy mix positions it favorably against international fuel price volatility.
