The Bombay Bakers Association has raised alarms over a critical shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) affecting bakeries across Mumbai, Thane, and Mumbra. Nasir Ansari, the association's president, stated that if the situation does not improve within a week, many bakeries may have to shut down. Approximately 500 bakeries in the region produce ladi pav, a staple bread that is integral to Mumbai's culinary landscape, with daily production estimated at one crore units. However, due to the ongoing crisis, production has plummeted to 50% capacity. Many bakers are resorting to black market purchases, paying upwards of ₹4,000 per cylinder, while others have temporarily closed their operations. Tariq Hussain, owner of New Kirmani Bakery, noted that the crisis is forcing bakers to revert to less legal methods of production, as they struggle to adapt to the lack of gas. The situation has also affected vendors who rely on ladi pav for dishes like vada pav, leading to a noticeable decrease in sales. As production continues to dwindle, bakers are considering price hikes for their products, with some already implementing increases of 10-15%. The association is set to meet with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to discuss solutions, including temporary allowances for wood-fired ovens and improved gas supply.
