The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced Rakesh Singh as its candidate for the Kolkata Port seat in the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections. This announcement comes just a day after Singh was released on bail by the High Court of Calcutta. Singh's candidacy is significant as he faces off against incumbent Firhad Hakim of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), who has held the seat since 2011. The Kolkata Port constituency, previously known as Garden Reach, is a TMC stronghold, and the election will take place on April 29. Singh, who was expelled from the West Bengal Congress in 2018, has a controversial background, having been arrested last year in connection with a protest incident involving BJP workers. The state government had opposed his bail, labeling him a “history sheeter” with numerous criminal cases against him. The BJP has now finalized its list of candidates for all 294 seats in West Bengal, including three non-BJP nominees it supports.
