The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been officially granted deemed-to-be university status by the Indian Ministry of Education, allowing it to award its own degrees. This significant decision, made on the advice of the University Grants Commission (UGC), encompasses NCERT and its six constituent institutions, which include the Regional Institutes of Education located in Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Mysuru, and Shillong, as well as the Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education in Bhopal. Recognized under the 'De Nova' category, NCERT can now engage in unique research and academic programs not offered by existing institutions. The Ministry has emphasized the need for NCERT to commence research programs and innovative academic courses, moving away from its previous affiliation with local universities like Barkatullah University and the University of Mysuru. This new status is expected to enhance the educational landscape in India by promoting specialized studies and research.
