Kunjipilla, later known as Shakthan Thampuran, took charge of Cochin at the age of 18, recognizing the kingdom's vulnerabilities due to fragmented power among hereditary chiefs. He sought advice from Komi Achan, the prime minister, and embarked on a journey to understand the kingdom's needs. Shakthan's first major initiative was to establish a centralized army, recruiting able-bodied men from various communities, including Nairs, Ezhavas, and Christians, to ensure law and order. He also formed a navy to patrol the backwaters against piracy, recognizing the necessity of security for prosperity. Shakthan's decisive actions included capturing robbers who threatened travelers, demonstrating his commitment to protecting his subjects. His reputation as a strong leader grew, leading to his nickname, Strong Thampuran. Alongside his political reforms, Shakthan entered into a relationship with Parukutty, a member of a respected family, further solidifying his status. However, his reign faced challenges with the invasion of Hyder Ali of Mysore, prompting him to defend his kingdom. Through his leadership, Shakthan laid the foundations for a more secure and prosperous Cochin.
