He criticized the current Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government for delaying the project, which had previously received in-principle approval and ₹11,600 crore (approximately $1.4 billion USD) in funding from the central government. Palaniswami accused the DMK of including the project in a policy note without taking action to implement it. His remarks were made alongside T.T.V. Dhinakaran, general secretary of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK).
