Rajasthan, the top solar energy-generating state in India, has approximately 60 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy projects awaiting necessary transmission links, according to a regulatory filing. The Central Transmission Utility of India Ltd (CTUIL) reported difficulties in establishing a transmission system for these projects, which is critical as India aims to nearly double its non-fossil fuel power generation to 500 GW by 2030. The state boasts a renewable energy potential of 179 GW, with over 85% of projects concentrated in Barmer, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, and Jodhpur districts. Despite receiving applications for 130 GW of grid connectivity, only 73 GW have planned or ongoing transmission systems. The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has allowed developers, such as Saurya Urja Company of Rajasthan Ltd, to withdraw their connectivity applications and recover bank guarantees due to these ongoing challenges in transmission planning.
