The Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) has responded to the sexual assault allegations against filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan, asserting that women's safety is crucial in the film industry. In a statement, AMMA expressed confidence in the judicial system and emphasized the need for a safe environment for all artists. Concurrently, the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) condemned the allegations as 'grave' and criticized the industry's failure to address systemic issues surrounding safety and accountability. Ranjith was taken into police custody following accusations from a woman actor who alleged he attempted to sexually assault her on a film set in Kochi, Kerala. The Kochi City Police have formed a Special Investigation Team to look into the case, which has raised significant concerns about the treatment of women in the industry. Police Commissioner S Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar highlighted the necessity for a workplace free from such incidents, stating that the allegations were verified before Ranjith's arrest, and he has been remanded to 14 days of police custody.
