A 19-year-old law student, Ruhaan Chadha, was arrested in South Delhi's Greater Kailash for allegedly hitting and killing 41-year-old Surendra Das, a house help, in a hit-and-run incident on March 31. Ruhaan reportedly claimed he was distracted while driving due to a conversation with a female friend in the passenger seat. His mother, Niharika Chadha, was also arrested for allegedly attempting to conceal evidence and harboring her son after the incident. The police seized the vehicle, a Maruti Ciaz, which showed signs of repair to hide the impact of the accident. Following the incident, Ruhaan fled to his mother's home, where she allegedly helped him evade the police for a week. The police tracked the vehicle using CCTV footage and narrowed down the search to a car registered in the Zamrudpur area. Ruhaan's driving license had been issued only two months prior, in January. Investigations are ongoing, and charges have been filed against both Ruhaan and Niharika under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
