Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has emphasized the importance of transparency in maritime logistics amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia, urging players not to exploit the situation for profit. During a review meeting, Sonowal highlighted that all shipping charges should be documented and monitored to protect trade interests. This marks the government's third public appeal to keep maritime charges in check, with the Directorate General of Shipping reiterating the need for shipping lines to inform exporters about additional charges. Sonowal directed port authorities to ensure that financial relief measures, such as waivers on ground rent and concessions on reefer charges, are passed on to stakeholders without delays. The crisis initially caused congestion with around 40,000 containers stuck at various ports, but timely interventions by the ministry have led to the clearance of nearly 90% of the backlog, restoring normal operations. Sonowal stated that coordinated efforts have been crucial in maintaining the resilience of India's trade during these geopolitical disruptions.
