In response to a Supreme Court ruling, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has initiated an investigation into the gherao of judicial officers in Malda district, West Bengal, which occurred on April 1. The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, expressed strong disapproval of the West Bengal government's inability to protect these officers during their work on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Following the court's directive, the NIA re-registered 12 cases, including seven First Information Reports (FIRs) from Mothabari Police Station and five from Kalichak Police Station. The Supreme Court bench invoked Article 142 to assign the case to the NIA, emphasizing that the offences fell outside its usual jurisdiction. The court also reprimanded West Bengal Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala and Director General of Police Siddh Nath Gupta for the breakdown in law and order, where judicial officers were reportedly held hostage for hours.
